When it comes to adding social media to your business's online marketing mix, there are many things to keep in mind when strategizing. Following are some thoughts, tips and tools to help kick off your social media plan:

Start with MMEE:

  1. Monitor- Listen for conversations happening in blogs, forums, social media sites, news sites, etc. Listen for sentiment, trends, sites and brand mentions.
  2. Measure- Assess ways to track campaigns, products, brands, sentiment, industry trends and competitors.
  3. Evaluate- Understand and become well versed in what you find, gather insights, regroup and strategize for your business. Keep in mind the 5 W’s: what, when, where, who & why
  4. Engage- Find and converse with gatekeepers and key influencers and establish, build and maintain online relationships.

Useful Online Tools, Technology and Software to use in tandem with a well-versed staff:

Online tools & software for Monitoring all of social media

Monitoring for websites

Monitoring for sentiment

Online tools & software for measuring

Technology/Software for creating content to share within social media

  • Flipcam or digital camera with recording capability
  • Video editing software (i.e. imovie)
  • Screen cap application (i.e. Camtasia or a good ol’ shift/command/4 for Mac users)
  • Video creation software (i.e. Visible Gains)

Remember, it's also important to educate your staff, set expectations/policy, and set aside time for social media. And even if you're not ready to incorporate social media into your marketing mix yet, you may want to claim your company name or brand before it's long gone!

Thank you for sharing MMEE! This is definitely the place to start developing your Online presence. Many businesses ignore the possibilities online because it's unfamiliar. Others avoid Social Media because they believe it's a waste of time, even if they have a website. 
 
This is like avoiding Television advertising in 1960, because radio is what everyone has. 
 
The real difference today is, billions of people only get their information about your products, services, and offerings online. 
 
It is also the least expensive, most interactive way to build your clients/customers into a community of fans. If you engage your clients, team members, vendors, etc. and deliver on your commitments, then Social Media can help you enhance the experience for everyone you care about. 
 
If people use the tools that you listed as integral components to a strong Marketing Plan, They would be astonished st how much it will impact their businesses.
