The Great White Hunt: Inbound Marketing

As I sat and watched my dad and brothers suiting up in their blaze orange, strapping on their guns and heading out for Wisconsin's opening day of the great white hunt this past weekend, I couldn't help but think of the many businesses that think they need to be doing the same this week (only putting on suits, strapping on marketing & sales materials and hunting for prospects, not deer).

The truth is, too many people think that the only way to new business is to go hunting for it "out there". Don't get me wrong, hunting is one way of going about finding new business, but it can be exhausting and often gets depressing fast.

It's important to realize there is plenty of business, and you don't necessarily have to fight to find it. Although it may initially require some learning and strategy, once you grasp a few concepts, business will find you!

So where is all this business lurking? Could it really be right at your fingertips?

The secret to success: Inbound Marketing, getting found by customers online. Unlike traditional marketing, which uses interruptions and "hunting" techniques to find customers, inbound marketing attracts qualified customers to your business like a magnet. Inbound marketing uses tools such as: content creation, search engine optimization and social media.

Not only does inbound marketing take some of the frustration out of finding new business, it costs less and is better targeted too. Inbound Marketing means creating content and talking about it, rather than buying lists or renting booths at trade shows. And unlike the notoriously poorly targeted traditional marketing techniques like cold-calling, Inbound Marketing means approaching people who self qualify themselves. They show interest in your content, and therefore are likely to be interested in your product.

I'm not saying you should throw your hunting gear away, because there's a time and place for everything. But by finding a spot for inbound marketing within your marketing mix, your target will start to find you rather than you hunting for them.
